Learning That Healing Doesn't Happen All at Once
For a long time, I thought healing would have a beginning and an end.
I imagined that one day I would wake up and everything would finally make sense. The pain would be gone. The memories wouldn't hurt anymore. The things that once overwhelmed me wouldn't have the same power.
I thought healing meant reaching a point where I could finally say, I'm okay now.
I've learned that healing doesn't really work that way.
Healing happens in the ordinary moments.
It happens on the days when nothing dramatic changes, but I respond differently than I would have before.
It happens when I recognize what I'm feeling instead of pushing it away.
It happens when I give myself permission to have a bad day without deciding that I've failed.
It happens one day at a time.
Healing Doesn't Always Feel Like Healing
Some days, healing feels like progress.
Other days, it feels like going backward.
There are days when I feel strong and confident in how far I've come.
Then something unexpected can happen—a memory, a conversation, a situation, or even something small—and suddenly I can feel emotions I thought I had already worked through.
For a long time, I saw those moments as proof that I wasn't healing.
Now I understand something different.
Being triggered doesn't erase the progress I've made.
Having a difficult day doesn't put me back at the beginning.
Sometimes healing means learning how to move through the difficult day without allowing it to become my entire life.
The Small Things Matter
I've learned that healing isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes it's getting out of bed.
Sometimes it's taking a shower.
Sometimes it's making my bed.
Sometimes it's brushing my teeth.
Those things might sound insignificant to someone else.
But there have been periods in my life when even those simple things felt difficult.
Getting back to those everyday routines became a reminder that I was beginning to find my way back to myself.
The little things mattered because they were evidence that I was moving.
Not running.
Not racing toward some finish line.
Just moving.
Healing While Being a Mother
One of the complicated parts of my healing journey has been doing it while being a mother.
I couldn't simply put life on hold while I figured myself out.
My daughter still needed me.
There were still responsibilities.
There were still everyday things that had to be done.
And sometimes I had to heal while simultaneously trying to be the mother I wanted to be.
In some ways, motherhood became part of my healing.
While teaching my daughter that her feelings mattered, I was learning that mine mattered too.
While encouraging her to speak up, I was learning to use my own voice.
While trying to give her the reassurance she needed, I was realizing how much I had needed reassurance myself.
I was parenting her while, in many ways, reparenting myself.
I Don't Have to Carry Everything Every Day
Another part of everyday healing has been learning that I don't have to carry every burden all the time.
Some things belong in the past.
Some things need to be talked about.
Some things need to be worked through.
And some things simply need to be acknowledged for what they were.
I don't have to pretend that painful things didn't happen.
But I also don't have to allow them to control every day that comes after them.
There is a difference between remembering something and living inside it.
I'm learning to remember without letting the memory become my present.
Healing Means Being Kinder to Myself
Perhaps one of the hardest parts of healing has been learning to stop being my own worst critic.
I have spent a lot of time looking backward and wondering what I could have done differently.
What I should have known.
What I should have seen.
What I should have said.
What I should have done.
But I can't change what I knew then.
I can only work with what I know now.
So I'm learning to give myself grace.
I'm learning that the woman I was years ago was trying to survive things with the tools she had at the time.
She didn't know everything I know now.
And she deserves compassion too.
I Don't Want My Healing to Become Her Burden
One of the reasons everyday healing matters so much to me is my daughter.
I don't want my unresolved pain to become something she feels responsible for carrying.
I don't want her to believe that she has to fix me.
I don't want her to feel responsible for my happiness.
I want her to know that I love her without asking her to carry what belongs to me.
That means I have to continue doing my own work.
My healing is my responsibility.
Her life is hers.
And I want her to be free to write her own story.
Some Days I Still Struggle
Healing hasn't made me immune to difficult days.
I still have moments when I struggle.
I still have emotions that surprise me.
I still have things I am working through.
But there is a difference between who I was and who I am becoming.
Today, I am more willing to acknowledge what I'm feeling.
I'm more willing to ask for help.
I'm more willing to admit when something hurts.
I'm more willing to give myself permission to rest.
I'm more willing to believe that one bad day doesn't erase months or years of progress.
That is healing too.
There Is No Finish Line
I've stopped looking for the day when I will finally be able to say that I'm completely healed.
Maybe that day doesn't exist.
Maybe healing is something I will continue doing throughout my life.
Maybe the goal isn't to become someone who has never been hurt.
Maybe the goal is to become someone who knows what to do when the hurt comes back.
To recognize it.
To acknowledge it.
To take care of myself.
To reach for support.
To keep moving forward.
Today Is Enough
I don't have to heal everything today.
I don't have to understand everything today.
I don't have to forgive everything today.
I don't have to have all the answers.
Today, I just need to take the next step.
Maybe that step is small.
Maybe nobody else will even notice it.
But I will.
Because I know where I've been.
And I know how hard it was to get here.
Every ordinary day that I choose myself is part of my healing.
Every time I get back up is part of my healing.
Every time I choose not to give my past control over my future is part of my healing.
Every time I remind myself that I am worthy of compassion is part of my healing.
And maybe that's what I've finally come to understand:
**Healing isn't one moment when everything becomes okay.
Healing is the collection of thousands of small moments when I choose to keep going.**
One morning.
One decision.
One breath.
One day at a time.
That is my everyday healing.
