To My Sister: The Person I Could Always Run To

Dear Sis,

There are some people who know us because they met us at a certain point in our lives. Then there are the people who knew us before we really knew ourselves. They remember our childhood, our family, the awkward stages, the good memories, and the difficult ones. They were there before we became the people we are today. For me, you are that person.

You are my sister, but you've always been more than just that. You were my first real friend. Growing up, it often felt like we really only had each other. Our family wasn't always close with extended family, and friends weren't constantly coming through our house. Most of the time, it was just us, figuring out childhood together.

When I was younger, I don't think I fully understood how important that was. I assumed you would always be there, always be nearby, and always be someone I could turn to. I didn't realize how much things would change when you grew up and eventually left home.

As I got older, I began to understand that you were someone I could run to when I needed help figuring things out. If something was bothering me, if I was confused about a situation, or if I simply needed another perspective, I knew I could come to you. You didn't always have to solve the problem. Sometimes I just needed someone who knew me well enough to help me sort through what I was thinking and feeling.

That meant more to me than I probably ever told you.

I remember how hard it was when you joined the Navy and left for basic training. You were eighteen, and I was still trying to figure out who I was without my big sister there beside me. I knew you were starting an important new chapter in your life, but that didn't make it easier for me. From my perspective, I had suddenly lost the person who had been my constant.

Even though life eventually took us in different directions, you never stopped being that person for me.

You've seen so many versions of me over the years. You've seen me happy and confident, but you've also seen me confused, hurting, and struggling to hold myself together. You've seen me make choices I was proud of and choices I wished I could change. You've seen me start over more than once.

And through all of that, you've loved me.

You've loved me even when I was broken.

You've helped me even when I didn't know how to help myself.

I don't mean broken as though there was something fundamentally wrong with me. I mean those times when life had taken its toll and I felt like I had lost pieces of myself. During those times, knowing I could turn to you mattered. You didn't require me to have everything figured out before you would be there.

That kind of love is something I will never take for granted.

Eventually, I moved from Baltimore to Central New York to be closer to you. Looking back, I realize that I wasn't simply moving from one place to another. I was moving toward family and toward someone who had always been an important part of my life.

I've been here for many years now, and one of the things that means the most to me is knowing that I can still run to you when I need help figuring something out.

I'm not a kid anymore. I've experienced things neither of us could have imagined when we were young, and I've learned to make plenty of decisions on my own. But growing up doesn't mean I stopped needing my sister.

There are still times when I need another opinion, someone to help me look at a situation differently, or simply someone who knows me well enough to understand where I'm coming from. And you're still there.

You've never had to have all the answers. What matters is that you're available. Knowing that I can call you, talk to you, ask your opinion, or just tell you what's going on gives me a comfort that is hard to explain.

We've obviously had our disagreements over the years. We're sisters, and that's part of being sisters. We've grown, changed, and lived our own lives. But underneath all of that is a bond that has survived childhood, distance, adulthood, and all the changes life has brought us.

You've seen me at my strongest and at my weakest, and somehow I'm still your little sister.

That means something to me.

You are one of the people who connects me to where I came from. You remember the little girl I was, the teenager I became, and all the versions of me that followed. You don't need the entire backstory because you were there for so many of the chapters yourself.

When I think about my life, you're not just somewhere in the story. You're woven through it.

I hope you know how grateful I am for that.

Thank you for being my sister. Thank you for being my first friend. Thank you for listening when I needed to talk, helping me when I didn't know what to do, and giving me your perspective when I couldn't see clearly for myself.

Thank you for loving me when I was happy and loving me when I was hurting. Thank you for loving me when I felt strong and loving me when I felt completely broken. Thank you for still being someone I can turn to today.

I don't know what the next chapters of our lives will look like, but I know I want you in them. I want more conversations, more laughter, more memories, and probably more moments where one of us looks at the other and thinks, "Seriously?"

Because that's part of us too.

No matter how much life changes, there is one thing I know will never change.

You will always be my sister.

And I will always be your little sister.

Love always,

Your little sister
