A Letter to Myself: Where I Am Right Now

Dear Me,

I know you're tired.

Not just physically tired, but tired in the way that comes from carrying too much for too long. Tired from trying to figure things out. Tired from starting over. Tired from wondering whether you've made the right choices and questioning what comes next.

But I want you to stop for a moment.

Take a breath.

Look at how far you've come.

You may not be where you thought you would be at this point in your life. Maybe you imagined things would look different by now. Maybe you thought you would have more figured out. Maybe you thought certain chapters would have ended differently.

But your life isn't a failure because it didn't follow the plan you once imagined.

Life rarely does.

You've made mistakes.

You've made choices you wish you could change.

You've trusted people who didn't deserve your trust.

You've stayed in situations longer than you should have.

You've had moments when you didn't recognize yourself.

You've had moments when simply getting through the day was an accomplishment.

But you are still here.

And that matters.

You Don't Have to Have It All Figured Out

I know you sometimes feel like you should have a perfect plan for the rest of your life.

You don't.

You are allowed to be uncertain.

You are allowed to change your mind.

You are allowed to start something new.

You are allowed to admit that the person you were five years ago isn't exactly the person you are today.

And you are allowed to become someone different tomorrow.

You don't have to know exactly where this next chapter is going.

You just have to be willing to turn the page.

You Are More Than the Things You've Survived

There are parts of your past that still hurt.

There are memories you wish you could erase.

There are things you've experienced that changed you in ways you didn't understand at the time.

But you are not only the woman who experienced those things.

You are also the woman who survived them.

You are the woman who kept going.

You are the woman who learned.

You are the woman who is still trying to heal.

Don't let your hardest moments become the only way you describe yourself.

You have laughter too.

You have creativity.

You have dreams.

You have love.

You have stories to tell.

You have things left to accomplish.

You have a life that is still being written.

You Are Allowed to Miss What Was

There are chapters of your life you will miss.

There are people you will miss.

There are versions of yourself you may even miss.

That doesn't mean you need to go backward.

Sometimes we can miss something and still know that it belongs in the past.

You can be grateful for what something gave you while accepting that it is no longer where you belong.

You can love someone and still need boundaries.

You can miss a time in your life and still be excited about what comes next.

You don't have to choose between honoring your past and moving forward.

You can do both.

Your Daughter Is Growing Up—and So Are You

Your daughter has reached a new chapter of her life.

You've spent so many years being needed, protecting, teaching, worrying, encouraging, and trying to give her the best version of yourself that you could.

Now things are changing.

And I know that hurts.

But her growing up doesn't mean you are no longer needed.

It means your role is changing.

You don't have to hold her hand through every step anymore.

You get to watch her take steps of her own.

And while she's beginning to build her adult life, you get an opportunity to build the next part of yours too.

That doesn't make you selfish.

It doesn't mean you love her any less.

It means you are allowed to have a life beyond motherhood.

You are still her mother.

She is still your daughter.

That will never change.

Stop Punishing Yourself for Starting Over

You've started over more than once.

Maybe that's something you've looked at as evidence that you failed.

I want you to see it differently.

Starting over means something ended.

It means something didn't work.

But it also means you were willing to keep going.

There is strength in that.

You don't have to be ashamed of the number of times you've had to rebuild.

You don't have to pretend you got everything right.

You can simply say:

This is where I am now.

And then begin again.

Give Yourself Permission to Want More

You've spent a lot of your life thinking about what other people needed from you.

Now I want you to ask yourself a different question:

What do I want?

Not what does everyone else want.

Not what will make everyone else happy.

Not what will keep the peace.

What do you want?

What makes you excited?

What makes you curious?

What kind of life would make you proud?

You don't need all the answers today.

Start asking the questions.

Start listening to yourself.

You have spent enough time learning how to survive.

Now it's time to learn what it means to live.

Be Patient With Yourself

You are still healing.

You are still learning how to recognize old patterns.

You are still learning boundaries.

You are still learning that you don't have to carry everyone else's emotions.

You are still learning that taking care of yourself isn't selfish.

You are still learning who you are outside of everything you've been through.

That's okay.

Healing isn't a straight line.

Some days you will feel strong.

Other days you will feel like you're right back where you started.

That doesn't mean you've lost your progress.

It means you're human.

Give yourself the same patience you would give someone you love.

And Please Don't Give Up on Yourself

There will be days when you wonder whether things will ever really get better.

There will be days when starting over feels exhausting.

There will be days when you question whether you are capable of building the life you want.

When those days come, remember this:

You've already survived days you once thought you couldn't survive.

You've already made it through things that changed you.

You've already begun again.

You can do it again.

You don't need to rebuild your entire life in one day.

Just take the next step.

Then another.

One day at a time.

One decision at a time.

One page at a time.

This Is Your Life Too

For so long, you've been defined by your roles.

Daughter.

Wife.

Mother.

Soldier.

Survivor.

But you are also simply you.

And maybe this chapter is about getting to know that woman again.

Maybe it's about discovering what makes you happy.

Maybe it's about writing the stories you've carried inside you.

Maybe it's about creating something meaningful from everything you've experienced.

Maybe it's about finally believing that your future doesn't have to look like your past.

Whatever comes next, don't be afraid of it.

You don't have to know exactly where you're going.

Just don't stop moving forward.

So, dear me, I want you to remember something.

You are not behind.

You are not broken.

You are not too old to start again.

You are not defined by your mistakes.

You are not defined by your trauma.

You are not defined by the relationships that didn't work.

You are not defined by the chapters that hurt.

You are a woman who is still becoming.

And there is something beautiful about that.

You still have pages left to write.

So write them.

Write them honestly.

Write them imperfectly.

Write them with courage.

Write them with hope.

And when you're tempted to look backward and decide that your past tells you who you are, remind yourself:

Your past is a chapter, not the whole story.

And this time, you're not just surviving the story.

You're writing it.

Love,

Me
