My Closest Friend

My Sister Has Been My Rock

When I think about the people who have been there for me throughout my life, there is one person who has always held a place that is different from everyone else.

My sister.

She's my older sister, but her role in my life has become so much more than simply being my sister.

She has been someone I could lean on.

Someone I could talk to.

Someone who has seen different versions of me throughout my life and has continued to be there.

She has been my rock.

She Has Known Me for My Whole Life

There is something unique about having someone who knew you before you knew yourself.

My sister knew me as a child.

She knew the girl I was before the struggles, before I understood mental health, before I had the words to explain what I was feeling.

She has seen me grow up.

She has seen me make mistakes.

She has seen me become a mother.

She has seen me struggle.

And she has seen me fight my way through some incredibly difficult moments.

There are parts of my story that she doesn't need explained because she was there for pieces of it.

That kind of history creates a bond that is difficult to put into words.

She Has Seen the Parts of Me Others Don't

Mental health struggles can make you feel like you have different versions of yourself.

There is the version people see on the outside.

The person who gets up, goes about her day, takes care of responsibilities, and says she's okay.

And then there is the person behind all of that.

The person who is exhausted.

The person who overthinks.

The person who is scared.

The person who sometimes doesn't know what to do next.

My sister has seen both.

I haven't always had to pretend with her.

And that is a gift.

She Doesn't Always Have to Fix Anything

One of the things I've learned about having someone in your corner is that they don't necessarily have to have the answers.

Sometimes you just need someone who will listen.

Sometimes you need someone who will remind you of what you already know.

Sometimes you need someone who will tell you the truth when you don't want to hear it.

And sometimes you simply need someone to sit beside you in the middle of something difficult.

My sister has been that person for me.

She hasn't needed to solve every problem.

She has simply been there.

And sometimes being there is everything.

She Has Seen Me as a Mother

My sister has also seen me navigate motherhood.

She has watched me raise my daughter while dealing with my own struggles.

She has seen the love I have for my child.

She has seen the worry that comes with wanting to protect her.

And she has seen me question whether I was doing enough.

Being a mother while struggling with mental health can come with an enormous amount of guilt.

Sometimes you wonder whether your struggles are affecting your child.

Sometimes you question every decision.

Having someone who knows you well enough to remind you that you're trying can make a difference.

She Has Been There Through the Hard Conversations

Not every conversation between sisters is easy.

Sometimes the people who love us most are the people who are willing to tell us things we don't necessarily want to hear.

My sister has had to see parts of my life that weren't easy.

She has had to watch me make decisions she may not have understood.

She has had her own reactions to the things I've gone through.

But even when we haven't seen everything the same way, that doesn't erase the bond between us.

Family can disagree and still love each other.

Sometimes love means being honest.

Sometimes it means giving someone space.

And sometimes it means continuing to stand beside them even when you don't completely understand their choices.

She Has Watched Me Change

My sister has known me for so long that she has witnessed my evolution.

She has seen the person I was.

The person I became.

And the person I'm still becoming.

She has watched me learn more about my mental health.

She has watched me confront pieces of my past.

She has watched me work through things I once tried to bury.

She has watched me become more willing to talk about what I've experienced.

And she has watched me find pieces of myself that I thought were gone.

Having someone who remembers where you started can make the progress you're making now feel even more meaningful.

Sometimes a Rock Is Simply Someone Who Stays

We often think of a rock as someone who always knows exactly what to say.

Someone who can fix everything.

Someone who never gets tired.

But that's not necessarily what a rock is.

Sometimes a rock is simply someone who stays.

Someone who doesn't disappear when things get difficult.

Someone who knows your flaws and still loves you.

Someone who can see your mess and still see the person underneath it.

My sister has been that for me.

She has been a constant in a life that hasn't always felt very constant.

I Don't Want to Take That for Granted

It's easy to take family for granted.

We assume they'll always be there.

We assume they'll understand.

We assume they'll know how much they mean to us without us having to say it.

But sometimes we need to say it anyway.

So if my sister ever wonders whether her presence has mattered, I hope she knows it has.

More than she probably realizes.

There have been moments when simply knowing I could reach out to her made things feel a little less overwhelming.

She has been part of my support system.

Part of my story.

Part of my life for as long as I can remember.

She Has Helped Me Remember Who I Am

Mental health struggles can make you forget yourself.

You become so focused on what's wrong that you forget everything that's right.

You forget your strengths.

You forget how much you've survived.

You forget the things you've accomplished.

Sometimes you need someone who remembers for you.

My sister is one of those people.

She knows where I've come from.

She knows the person I've been.

And she can see the person I'm becoming.

That perspective matters.

Sisters Share More Than Blood

Being sisters means sharing a history.

But for me, it has also meant sharing pieces of life that aren't always easy to explain to anyone else.

We've experienced different things.

We've made different choices.

We've become different people.

But there is still a connection that runs underneath all of it.

She is my sister.

And she is my rock.

I Hope She Knows

I don't know if I've always told her how much she means to me.

Maybe I've assumed she knows.

Maybe I've been too caught up in everything happening around me to stop and say it.

But I want her to know now.

Thank you.

Thank you for being there.

Thank you for listening.

Thank you for knowing me.

Thank you for seeing me when I didn't always know how to see myself.

Thank you for being someone I could lean on.

Thank you for staying.

I don't expect her to carry my burdens.

I don't expect her to fix my life.

I don't need her to have all the answers.

I simply need her to continue being my sister.

Because sometimes the greatest support isn't someone who saves you.

It's someone who reminds you that you were never alone.

**My sister has been my rock.

And through all the chapters of my life, I am grateful that she's been there to help me keep turning the pages.**
